The process began with two decisions: to have our carbon footprint measured by a qualified third party, and to use an internationally recognized measurement standard, the GreenHouse Gas protocol (G.H.G).
The G.H.G protocol structures the measurement through 3 prisms called scope:
- Scope 1 covers direct emissions from buildings, vehicles, etc. owned or controlled by the company.
- Scope 2 covers emissions linked to the purchase of electricity, steam, heat or cooling by the reporting company.
- Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, whether from its employees or suppliers (upstream emissions) or its customers (downstream emissions).
Initial results:
Although the year 2022 was difficult to measure due to the profound transformations in the context in which our research activities were carried out, the measurement of our carbon footprint establishes a total emission level of 752tCO2e (or 30.6tCO2e per employee) broken down as follows:
- 19.6tCO2e (i.e. 2.6%) for scope 1
- 12.6tCO2e (i.e. 1.7%) for scope 2
- 719tCO2e (or 95.7%) for scope 3
Having established this initial picture, we proceeded in the same way to determine our carbon footprint for the year 2023, the 1st full and standardized year of OPM’s activity.
Our carbon footprint measures a total emission level of 713tCO2e (or 37.5tCO2e per employee), broken down as follows:
- 0.3tCO2e (or 0.004%) for scope 1
- 7.4tCO2e (or 1%) for scope 2
- 705.6CO2e (98.9%) for scope 3
This reduction in our carbon footprint results from a drop of over 75% in our direct emissions (scope 1 & 2) and a slight decrease (2%) in our indirect emissions.
As part of a collaborative approach, all interested employees contribute both to the measurement and to the consideration and implementation of actions to reduce our carbon footprint, reflecting a shared awareness and determination to protect our environment.
